This project explores the human need to preserve corpses. The gelatin cubes, which only maintain their shape and contents for a brief time until they start decomposing, symbolize the ephemeral quality of corpse preservation – bodies can only be preserved temporarily until they inevitably start decaying. Inside of the gelatin are two speakers that emit sound, representing the intangible parts of an individual. While the parts that we try to preserve are physical, it is the immaterial qualities that we really want to cling to. However, as everything is subject to time, and time leads to dissolution, our efforts to preserve come often in vain. What remains is the everlasting question we do not have an answer to – what comes after death. Which is why, in an attempt to come to terms with the unknown, we try to protect what we are familiar with and can understand.
